Days after going into Doak Campbell Stadium and knocking off fifth-ranked Florida State, Oklahoma rewarded head coach Bob Stoops with a seven-year extension worth $34.5 million.
The contract gave Stoops a $75,000 bump in annual salary and provides incentives to stay in Norman. Stoops, of course, receives plenty of interest from other tradition-rich programs almost every summer.
Stoops’ top-ranked Sooners defeated Florida State 23-13 on Saturday, moving his career record at Oklahoma to 131-31.
“I don’t think I need to add anything to the proof that he gave to the national viewing audience that there’s no better football coach in the country than he is,” Oklahoma president David Boren told the Associated Press. “In my opinion, he does not have a peer in college coaching either in terms of his strategic abilities as a coach, but also in terms of his example as a role model.”
Stoops, already one of the highest-paid coaches in the country, will make $5.15 million in salary and bonuses over the final three years of his contract. Alabama’s Nick Saban is the highest-paid coach this year, earning well over $5 million.
